The City of Xenia is testing a new traffic calming layout on Bellbrook Avenue between US-35 and Industrial Boulevard to help reduce speeding and improve safety along the corridor.

Traffic cones have been used to test different configurations over the past several weeks. Because the initial layout has not significantly reduced vehicle speeds, a new layout will be tested beginning the week of August 31.

The new configuration will create narrowed “chokepoints” at four locations along Bellbrook Avenue, allowing traffic to pass while encouraging drivers to slow down.

The City will monitor vehicle speeds and gather feedback to determine whether the approach is effective. Depending on the results, the City may replace the cones with removable concrete curb blocks or return the roadway to its existing configuration.

Residents and business owners along the corridor can contact the City’s Planning and Zoning Division with questions or feedback.

Crews will return at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, to complete a more permanent repair. During the work, customers along E. Main St. and surrounding blocks may experience reduced water pressure.

Work is expected to be completed and full water pressure restored by early Thursday morning, Aug. 27.

If you have questions, please contact the City or the Engineering Department. We appreciate your patience and understanding while crews complete this work.

If you've noticed Parnell Park looking a little different lately, don't worry. That's all part of the plan! Here's what to expect as the park is transformed into a native prairie grass and wildflower preserve.

The first growing season is typically the messiest because weeds are common while native prairie grasses and wildflowers take time to establish. This is a normal part of the process.

Earlier this season, herbicide treatments were applied to help reduce weed growth. Now that the plants have grown, the next step is to mow (bush hog) the property to remove persistent weeds before they produce seeds and to give the native grasses and wildflowers more room and sunlight to thrive.

City crews will also mow a walking trail through the middle of the park that connects the existing park entrances, making it easier for visitors to enjoy the space as it continues to grow.

Some vegetation will continue growing through the end of the season, and an additional mowing may be needed later this year. Each year, the native prairie grasses and wildflowers will become more established and occupy a larger portion of the park.

Thank you for your patience as this space continues to grow and evolve.
