XFD Recruiting

We are glad you're visiting the Xenia Fire Division Recruiting page to learn more about our organization. The Xenia Fire Division has a long history of serving the community. It was established in 1837 when the Ohio state legislature allowed the City of Xenia to borrow $5,000 to purchase firefighting equipment. Nearly 100 years later, in 1941, the Xenia Fire Division became the first full-time staffed fire divisions in Greene County and one of the first in the nation. It was awarded a charter from the International Association of Firefighters in July 1941 and was assigned Local 698.

Xenia Fire Division was also one of the first fire divisions in Ohio to have full-time paramedics on staff. The first class of employees who were trained by doctors and nurses at Greene Memorial Hospital were scheduled to graduate on April 3, 1974. However, on that same day, an F-5 tornado tore through the Xenia community claiming the lives of 32 people. Instead of holding a graduation ceremony, the class of employees sprang into action to provide care for those injured during the tornado. They remained on duty for several days in a row following the disaster.

Nearly 50 years after that tragic day, Xenia Fire Division is a multi-faceted Fire, EMS, and Rescue Service organization. In 2022, XFD responded to more than 6,000 calls for service. Its front-line ambulances, Medic 31 and Medic 32, are the two busiest Medic transport units in Greene County. While other departments take more total calls, spread out by more front-line ambulances, Medic 31 and Medic 32 respond to more total calls individually throughout the year.

HOW WE OPERATE

The Xenia Fire & EMS Division is divided into three shifts (A, B, and C) which are assigned to two stations. Each shift has a Captain, who serves as the shift-commander and a Lieutenant is assigned to each station. The Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief work Monday through Friday administrating the operations of the Fire & EMS Division, along with a part-time fire inspector.

The fire division utilizes a work schedule referred to as the “California Swing Schedule," meaning employees work an average of 10, 24 hours shifts per month. However, as opposed to a traditional 24 on and 48 off schedule, our employees work 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, and 96 off. This schedule allows for a longer duration of recovery time for employees to destress and spend time with family.
